This leads to there being more younger officers in the army than older ones. Many of the officers of the old royalist army left their regiments during the overthrowing of the monarchy while those who remained were either executed or imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. Their was no regulation uniform until the Egyptian campaign, but even then most of the men wore different types of hats, pants, coats, etc. Due to how desperate the situation was for France, these men were quickly inducted into the army. The army consisted of mostly untrained but enthusiastic volunteers.
